Star Anise

Also known as Chinese anise and badian anise.

Available dried in whole, broken, ground and in seeds.
This spice will stay fresh indefinitely if stored in a cool, dry place in an airtight container.

Star anise tastes good in Oriental-style dishes, especially chicken, pork and duck. Star anise is excellent used in stir-fried vegetables as well as dishes containing soy sauce, fish and shellfish.

Star anise is a spice that gets its name from its shape, it is the star shaped fruit of a small evergreen tree native to China. Each point of the star contains a shiny brown seed that is less aromatic than the pod.

It is used in Asian cuisine and is the most essential ingredient in Chinese five spice powder. It is similar in flavor to anise since it contains the same essential oil, but star anise is slightly stronger in flavor.
